He lifts his head, fairly surprised. Before Miss Morstan Holmes had been content to think that Watson really had embraced this lifestyle, but this whole incident has made him realize just what Watson was giving up to be with him. He felt guilty again, for the umpteenth time, at seemingly pressuring Watson to join him in their illicit relationship. The guilt had begun to eat away at him just as much as his jealousy and resigned heartache.
